Community members rallied to fund £5,000 for a young man who was living on the streets

John, 28, was unemployed and about to spend Christmas without a roof over his head.

After seeing the man on the streets of Reading, Harry Beardsley volunteered to pay for a couple nights' housing during the festive season.

Harry then resorted to Twitter to ask for further aid from the Reading community.
Within hours, generous donors had raised almost £5,000 on GoFundMe to cover a six-month deposit and rent.

‘Thank you everyone for helping me,' John said in a moving video message.

I'm going to obtain a job and rent a place. I wish everyone a wonderful 2022 and beyond.'

John has a trial shift booked in the pub where he and Harry had lunch, plus other offers from Twitter users.

Two people offered to assist John out: a woman who works for a Woodley scaffolding firm and a man who operates a commercial cleaning company in town.

Harry's post has gotten over 50,000 likes and nearly 1,000 comments complimenting his kindness.
