A failed asylum seeker wrenched the five-year-old son of a stranger from his mother’s arms before leaping with him beneath the wheels of an oncoming train.

The Indian man lay between the rails at Wuppertal train station in western Germany clutching the child as the train rolled over them.

German police said the boy escaped with minor injuries while the man was unharmed as the train rolled over them, it was reported.

According to reports, the boy’s mum was comforted by passengers as medics pulled her son to safety as she stood on the platform with her other children, aged one and three.

Local media reported the man arrived in Germany in 2010 and was due to be deported next month.

It was speculated the man may have tried to injure himself to avoid deportation, but no explanation was given as to why he grabbed the child.

Police reportedly said the man is being investigated for attempted murder and has been detained in a psychiatric hospital.

In a statement issued to German media, police said: “The family were complete strangers to him.

“He simply walked up to them, grabbed the little boy without a word.

“Then he jumped from the platform to the track and ran towards the incoming train.

“The driver made an emergency stop. But the first wagon rolled over them both.

“The boy only has abrasions. The man remained unharmed.

“He is now being investigated for attempted murder in a psychiatric facility.”
