Police make a heartbreaking journey with a Moses basket to recover the body of a newborn baby that was discovered by a member of the public in a field.
Officers were pictured walking across grass with the small basket as they apparently made their way to recover the body of the deceased child.
The infant, who is thought to be a newborn, was found in the field in Heywood, around three miles away from Rochdale, at rush hour this morning.
Cops sealed off the area following the devastating find shortly after 7am.
The baby’s identity and that of its mum are currently unknown.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7.10am on Wednesday April 4, 2018, police were called to a field near George Street in Heywood, to reports that the body of a baby had been found.
“Officers attended and discovered the body of what is believed to be a newborn baby. A scene is in place while police enquiries continue.”
Detectives have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries around Peel Lane and George Street, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Expressing their horror, one resident said: “When I found it was a little baby, I thought it was awful. It knocked me sick.”
Another local described the area as a tight-knit community.
She said: “Everyone’s really shocked.”
The upsetting picture of police carrying a moses basket at the scene was captured by an MEN photographer. It shows a woman in a large, dark-coloured coat carrying the item as a uniformed officer walks beside her.
The MEN reported: “Our photographer has sent this incredibly sad picture from Heywood. Police are going to the scene with a basket. Heartbreaking.”
A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the scene at 7.10am.
They sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle but didn’t take anyone to hospital.
