A North Dakota man tightened the rope around a pregnant woman’s neck as his girlfriend sliced her stomach open and then tore the baby from her womb, a court heard.

William Hoehn is charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the death of 22-year-old Savanna Greywind, who was eight months pregnant when she was brutally murdered in August 2017.

Hoehn’s live-in girlfriend at the time, Brooke Crews, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit kidnapping and murder and lying to law officers in December 2017.

Her parents and frantic boyfriend Ashton Matheny raised the alarm sparking a major police search, according to US media reports.

A neighbour reported hearing a baby’s cries coming from the home of 38-year-old Brooke Crews.

When officers arrived they found a newborn they suspected to be Savanna’s child.

Crews initially claimed the child was her own.

Days later, the tragic victim’s body was found wrapped in plastic and floating down a river in Fargo, North Dakota.

William Hoehn, 32, has been charged with the conspiracy to commit murder.

He allegedly told Crews: “If she’s not dead, she is now,” prosecuting lawyer Ryan Younggren said.

However Hoehn says that he did not know Crews had planned to kill Greywind.

He claims that when he came home he discovered Crews cleaning up blood in the bathroom.

She is then said to have presented him with the baby and saying, “this is our family”.

Greywind disappeared after visiting her next-door neighbour Crews for a dress fitting on August 19.

It was claimed by Crews that Savanna returned two days later at 3.30am and gave her the baby girl.

Crews eventually confessed to police that she had tried to get the newborn from Savanna.

Court documents read: “Crews admitted she had taken advantage of Savanna Greywind in an attempt to obtain her child and possibly keep the child as her own.”

While officials still have not understood how Greywind’s body ended up in the river forensics concluded that she bled to death.

Defence lawyer Daniel Borgen said she was already dead when Hoehn came into the bathroom, and he tried to cover the crime.

Borgen said: “He helped her. He shouldn’t have. He should have immediately called the police.”

Crews, his former girlfriend, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and two other charges in December.
