A passenger plane skidded off the runway as it tried to land and came within yards of plunging into the Black Sea.
The Pegasus Airlines aircraft, carrying 162 passengers and flight crew, narrowly avoided plunging into the sea at Trabzon Airport.
Dramatic photographs show the plane lying nose down stuck on the frozen muddy slope.
Footage on social media shows panicked passengers shouting inside the plane as they try to escape.
One passenger, Fatma Gordu, told Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu: “We tilted to the side, the front was down while the plane’s rear was up. There was panic; people shouting, screaming.”
A firefighter is also seen hosing down the plane, although no smoke is seen coming from the stricken aircraft.
All 162 passengers and flight crew were safely evacuated from the Boeing 737-800 on Sunday morning, Pegasus Airlines said.
In a statement, the airline said the plane had a ‘runway excursion incident during landing’.
“All 162 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew have been disembarked safely from the aircraft,” the statement read.
“There has been no loss of life or injury to anyone on-board.”
Turkish officials closed the airport for several hours as it carried out an investigation, but has since been reopened. It is not yet known what caused the plaen, which had departed from the Turkish capital of Ankara, to come off the runway.
Speaking to Turkish media, Trabzon Goerner Yucel Yavuz said: “We’ve taken all necessary measures. We will reopen the airport to airport traffic as soon as possible.”
Student pilot and aviation photographer Brendan Grainger tweeted that it had been raining for the past two hours at the time of accident.
Turkish Airlines said two inbound flights to Trabzon and a scheduled flight from the city to Istanbul were cancelled as a result of the incident.
Work began this morning to remove the ‘substantially damaged’ aircraft from the cliff edge.
