Experts in South Africa, where Omicron was discovered, say there are five warning indications.

These differ from the well-known NHS trifecta of ‘fever, cough, and loss of smell'.

Symptoms of Omicron include scratchy throat, dry cough, excessive fatigue, moderate muscle aches, and night sweats.
An early detector of the Omicron strain was Dr Angelique Coetzee, SAMA chairperson.

In November, she reported a ‘clinical picture that doesn't fit Delta'.
She told Sky News earlier today that Omicron is now a ‘mild sickness'.

But, she added, ‘the picture is really different with unvaccinated people'.

The UK's Covid-19 alert level has been upgraded due to a ‘substantial' rise in cases on the NHS.

The five symptoms to watch out for are:

  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Scratchy throat
  • Dry cough
  • Mild muscle aches

The exact number of Omicron infections in the UK is unknown, although daily infections could reach 200,000.
Sajid Javid warned that cases of the new variety would spike in the run-up to Christmas.

‘While Omicron represents over 20% of cases in England, we've already seen it climb to over 44% in London,' he told MPs today.

The Covid-19 variety is expected to become prevalent in the city within 48 hours.

Ordering a free PCR test was also advised, despite the fact that they were unavailable on the government website this morning due to ‘exceptionally high demand'.
