The family of a Kent burglar killed after breaking into a pensioner’s home have clashed with police and furious locals after laying another shrine

CONSTANT REMINDER Hither Green burglar Henry Vincent’s family given site for ‘shrine’ to just 400 yards from Richard Osborn-Brooks’ house

RELATIVES of burglar Henry Vincent have been given a site for a shrine in his memory just 400 yards from the home of hero pensioner Richard Osborn-Brooks.

Vincent’s loved ones have had flowers, notes and pictures moved a quarter of a mile down the road from the terrace 78-year-old Mr Osborn-Brooks shares with his wife Maureen, 76, in Hither Green, South London.

Some 20 women and youths – many wearing shades, scarves and hoodies to hide their identities – clashed with officers and angry local residents for around 20 minutes this afternoon.

The family arrived in the street armed with floral tributes, birthday cards and balloons to place a fresh shrine at the scene of his death on what would have been his 38th birthday.

But just hours later the shrine was removed by council workers and taken to a community garden.

One of the cards has a teddy bear on the front saying “Daddy”.

Tributes were placed near the home of Richard Osborn-Brooks, whose home Vincent broke into on the day of his death.

The pensioner was arrested over Vincent’s death before he was released without charge.

The family of Mr Osborn-Brooks have been barred from speaking to him, a relative says.

Mr Osborn-Brooks and his sick wife Maureen, 76, are in a police safe house.

The relative said: “I think police are watching his calls. There is no way I can forward anything to him.

“I think there’s someone in my family, I don’t know who, who liaises with the police about it. We know nothing more.”

Angry local residents had previously torn down tributes left in Vincent’s memory opposite the house, while the pensioner and his disabled wife have gone into hiding over fear of reprisals.

Originally the group tried to put the shrine back on the fence 20 yards from Richard Osborn-Brooks house.

But police moved them on.

Confusion reigned as the group then moved up and down the road looking for a new place to put the shrine and reportedly clashed with locals.

They then decided to place them at a house on Further Green Road which had previously agreed to have the tribute outside their house, but the owner was not in.

They eventually settled on the end of South Park Crescent.

The travellers accused police of racism as they laid their tributes.

One woman said: “Why are you being racist? Why are you people picking on us for?”

The placard with the picture of Vincent has not been placed at the shrine.

Henry’s auntie, said: “At the end of the day Henry was not a murderer, he was not a killer….what you’re doing here, the bombers don’t get as much publicity as this.

Asked at the scene whether she felt the family were being racially discriminated against because they are travellers, she said she did.

She said: “yes I do and at the end of the day you cannot get any worse a penalty from a judge than the death sentence can you? Henry got a death sentence.

“I would not care if Henry got fifty years in prison as long as I could see him every day….. his blood was split there (she points to an area of Further Green Road) and there have been death threats to his children.

“What have they done in life? “They are not married yet or anything.”

The auntie added they would not be returning to the road and were only here due to Henry’s birthday.

“Just leave them (the flowers) alone, we are not coming back anymore to this s**t road.”

She added Henry had a “drug addiction” and he “paid the ultimate price.”

One angry local resident told the travelers to ‘go away’ as they at first refused to leave without laying their tributes, telling police: “We will stand here and wait all day long.”

And an elderly man came out of his house and told the travellers: “What’s all this? I’m trying to sleep. Go away! Go away! Go away!”

So what do you think?
