Vegans are outraged by a notice posted outside a butcher’s shop calling the business’ practises “ignorant.”

The enraged plant eaters called the owners of W.M Christie Butchers in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, "psychopaths" last weekend.

The statement in chalk on the blackboard is: "Vegetarians harm hundreds of innocent plants every day.

Eat meat to help stop violence."

The vegan community in Edinburgh called the message "nonsense."

Jakub Dragon, 22, told Edinburgh Live: "How can they justify killing an animal like that?

"The only thing it will bring is rage and fighting.

"Vegetables, unlike animals, are not sentient. It's foolishness to me."

The billboard mocks the claim made by vegetarians and vegans that meat eaters slaughter thousands of innocent animals every year.

Willie Christie runs W.M. Christie, a thriving fifth generation family butcher started in 1889.

Others in Bruntsfield were offended by the sign.

"F psychopaths," one man said.

Also: "The ignorance is staggering. It is a food source for people and animals.

"You can't say I ate a carrot. People would cling to nonsense to justify slaughtering animals…animals who share our basic desires for happiness, safety, and freedom from suffering."

"So if I understand correctly, we should eat humans because humans killed the vegetation too?" said a third.

Veganuary is a yearly challenge conducted by a UK non-profit organisation to promote and teach veganism.

Last year, nearly 600,000 people pledged their support.

"It's Veganuary, so why not meatanury?" remarked Willie Christie, co-owner of the butchers with his brother. It was just a simple joke and banter, nothing more.

"It was misinterpreted. People tell us to be vegan or vegetarian, yet I am a butcher. We sell meat and I am advertising.

"Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and I appreciate that. So far, my Butchers has gotten a lot of attention."
